10 Ways To Avoid Viruses and Spyware

June 19, 2009

Erik Eckel

To have a fighting chance against today's rampant security threats, end users have to be informed and proactive. Here are some practical guidelines they can follow to minimize the risk of infection and attack.

Oh, the deck is stacked. Don't think for a minute it's not. As a technology professional responsible for securing office networks, workstations, and servers from viruses, spyware, adware, Trojans, and other malware infections, I can tell you that the situation is only getting worse.

A Computer Economics report showed that annual worldwide malware expenses increased by $10 billion (to $13 billion) over a recent 10-year span. Google Research suggests that one in every 10 Web sites is infected with "drive-by" malware. In June 2009, the Windows Secrets e-newsletter reported that such seemingly safe Web sites as Coldwell Banker.com, Variety.com, and even Tennis.com were exposing Internet Explorer visitors to the Gumblar exploit, which threatens to compromise visitors' systems in order to propagate.

IT professionals must encourage their users to follow several security practices to minimize virus, spyware, and malware exposure. But many computer techs are too busy to spread the word, or they don't have the time to build an appropriate memo or handout.

With that in mind, here's a handy reference list of 10 steps end users can adopt to avoid infection (including when using home systems to read and send work e-mail, create, edit, and distribute documents and spreadsheets, access the corporate VPN, and perform other office tasks). Post this list on your Intranet, distribute it in an e-mail, or download the PDF version and pass it along to end users. Just be sure the word gets out. Otherwise, you're likely to find yourself losing precious time cleaning and repairing infected systems or entire networks.

1: Install quality antivirus

Many computer users believe free antivirus applications, such as those included with an Internet service provider's bundled service offering, are sufficient to protect a computer from virus or spyware infection. However, such free anti-malware programs typically don't provide adequate protection from the ever-growing list of threats.

Instead, all Windows users should install professional, business-grade antivirus software on their PCs. Pro-grade antivirus programs update more frequently throughout the day (thereby providing timely protection against fast-emerging vulnerabilities), protect against a wider range of threats (such as rootkits), and enable additional protective features (such as custom scans).

2: Install real-time anti-spyware protection

Many computer users mistakenly believe that a single antivirus program with integrated spyware protection provides sufficient safeguards from adware and spyware. Others think free anti-spyware applications, combined with an antivirus utility, deliver capable protection from the skyrocketing number of spyware threats.

Unfortunately, that's just not the case. Most free anti-spyware programs do not provide real-time, or active, protection from adware, Trojan, and other spyware infections. While many free programs can detect spyware threats once they've infected a system, typically professional (or fully paid and licensed) anti-spyware programs are required to prevent infections and fully remove those infections already present.

3: Keep anti-malware applications current

Antivirus and anti-spyware programs require regular signature and database updates. Without these critical updates, anti-malware programs are unable to protect PCs from the latest threats.

In early 2009, antivirus provider AVG released statistics revealing that a lot of serious computer threats are secretive and fast-moving. Many of these infections are short-lived, but they're estimated to infect as many as 100,000 to 300,000 new Web sites a day.

Computer users must keep their antivirus and anti-spyware applications up to date. All Windows users must take measures to prevent license expiration, thereby ensuring that their anti-malware programs stay current and continue providing protection against the most recent threats. Those threats now spread with alarming speed, thanks to the popularity of such social media sites as Twitter, Facebook, and My Space.

4: Perform daily scans

Occasionally, virus and spyware threats escape a system's active protective engines and infect a system. The sheer number and volume of potential and new threats make it inevitable that particularly inventive infections will outsmart security software. In other cases, users may inadvertently instruct anti-malware software to allow a virus or spyware program to run.

Regardless of the infection source, enabling complete, daily scans of a system's entire hard drive adds another layer of protection. These daily scans can be invaluable in detecting, isolating, and removing infections that initially escape security software's attention.

5: Disable autorun

Many viruses work by attaching themselves to a drive and automatically installing themselves on any other media connected to the system. As a result, connecting any network drives, external hard disks, or even thumb drives to a system can result in the automatic propagation of such threats.

Computer users can disable the Windows autorun feature by following Microsoft's recommendations, which differ by operating system. Microsoft Knowledge Base articles 967715 and967940 are frequently referenced for this purpose.

6: Disable image previews in Outlook

Simply receiving an infected Outlook e-mail message, one in which graphics code is used to enable the virus' execution, can result in a virus infection. Prevent against automatic infection by disabling image previews in Outlook.

By default, newer versions of Microsoft Outlook do not automatically display images. But if you or another user has changed the default security settings, you can switch them back (using Outlook 2007) by going to Tools | Trust Center, highlighting the Automatic Download option, and selecting Don't Download Pictures Automatically In HTML E-Mail Messages Or RSS.

7: Don't click on email links or attachments

It's a mantra most every Windows user has heard repeatedly: Don't click on email links or attachments. Yet users frequently fail to heed the warning.

Whether distracted, trustful of friends, or colleagues they know, or simply fooled by a crafty email message, many users forget to be wary of links and attachments included within email messages, regardless of the source. Simply clicking on an email link or attachment can, within minutes, corrupt Windows, infect other machines, and destroy critical data.

Users should never click on email attachments without at least first scanning them for viruses using a business-class anti-malware application. As for clicking on links, users should access Web sites by opening a browser and manually navigating to the sites in question.

8: Surf smart

Many business-class anti-malware applications include browser plug-ins that help protect against drive-by infections, phishing attacks (in which pages purport to serve one function when in fact they try to steal personal, financial, or other sensitive information), and similar exploits. Still others provide "link protection," in which Web links are checked against databases of known-bad pages.

Whenever possible, these preventive features should be deployed and enabled. Unless the plug-ins interfere with normal Web browsing, users should leave them enabled. The same is true for automatic pop-up blockers, such as are included in Internet Explorer 8, Google's toolbar, and other popular browser toolbars.

Regardless, users should never enter user account, personal, financial, or other sensitive information on any Web page at which they haven't manually arrived. They should instead open a Web browser, enter the address of the page they need to reach, and enter their information that way, instead of clicking on a hyperlink and assuming the link has directed them to the proper URL. Hyperlinks contained within an e-mail message often redirect users to fraudulent, fake, or unauthorized Web sites. By entering Web addresses manually, users can help ensure that they arrive at the actual page they intend.

But even manual entry isn't foolproof. Hence the justification for step 10: Deploy DNS protection. More on that in a moment.

9: Use a hardware-based firewall

Technology professionals and others argue the benefits of software- versus hardware-based firewalls. Often, users encounter trouble trying to share printers, access network resources, and perform other tasks when deploying third-party software-based firewalls. As a result, I've seen many cases where firewalls have simply been disabled altogether.

But a reliable firewall is indispensable, as it protects computers from a wide variety of exploits, malicious network traffic, viruses, worms, and other vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, by itself, the software-based firewall included with Windows isn't sufficient to protect systems from the myriad robotic attacks affecting all Internet-connected systems. For this reason, all PCs connected to the Internet should be secured behind a capable hardware-based firewall.

10: Deploy DNS protection

Internet access introduces a wide variety of security risks. Among the most disconcerting may be drive-by infections, in which users only need to visit a compromised Web page to infect their own PCs (and potentially begin infecting those of customers, colleagues, and other staff).

Another worry is Web sites that distribute infected programs, applications, and Trojan files. Still another threat exists in the form of poisoned DNS attacks, whereby a compromised DNS server directs you to an unauthorized Web server. These compromised DNS servers are typically your ISP's systems, which usually translate friendly URLs such as yahoo.com to numeric IP addresses like 69.147.114.224.

Users can protect themselves from all these threats by changing the way their computers process DNS services. While a computer professional may be required to implement the switch, OpenDNS offers free DNS services to protect users against common phishing, spyware, and other Web-based hazards.

When you occasionally have a really bad day, and you just need to take it out on someone,
don't take it out on someone you know, take it out on someone you don't know.

I was sitting at my desk when I remembered a phone call I'd forgotten to make.
I found the number and dialed it. A man answered, saying ‘Hello.' I politely said,
'This is Chris. Could I please speak with Robyn Smith?

Suddenly a manic voice yelled out in my ear 'Get the right f***in number!'
and the phone was slammed down on me. I couldn't believe that anyone could be so rude.

When I tracked down Robyn's correct number to call her, I found that I had accidentally transposed the last two digits.

After hanging up with her, I decided to call the wrong number again.
When the same guy answered the phone, I yelled 'You're an @sshole!' and hung up.

I wrote his number down with the word 'asshole' next to it and put it in my desk drawer.
Every couple of weeks, when I was paying bills or had a really bad day, I'd call him up and yell, 'You're an @sshole!'
It always cheered me up.

When Caller ID was introduced, I thought my therapeutic '@sshole' calling would have to stop.
So, I called his number and said, 'Hi, this is John Smith from the telephone company.
I'm
calling to see if you’re familiar with our Caller ID Program?'

He yelled 'NO!' and slammed down the phone. I quickly called him back and said, 'That's because you're an @sshole!' and hung up.

One day I was at the store, getting ready to pull into a parking spot.
Some guy in a black BMW cut me off and pulled into the spot I had patiently waited for.
I hit the horn and yelled that I'd been waiting for that spot, but the idiot ignored me.

I noticed a 'For Sale' sign in his back window, so I wrote down his number.
A couple of days later, right after calling the first @sshole (I had his number on speed dial,)
I thought that I'd better call the BMW @sshole, too.

I said, 'Is this the man with the black BMW for sale?'

He said, 'Yes, it is.'

I asked, 'Can you tell me where I can see it?'

He said, 'Yes, I live at blah, blah, in blah, blah . It's a yellow rancher, and the car's parked right out in front.'

I asked, 'What's your name?'

He said, 'My name is Don Hansen.'

I asked, 'When's a good time to catch you, Don?'

He said, 'I'm home every evening after five.'

I said,
'Listen, Don, can I tell you something?'

He said, 'Yes?'

I said, 'Don, you're an @sshole!'

Then I hung up, and added his number to my speed dial, too. Now, when I had a problem, I had two @ssholes to call.

Then I came up with an idea. I called @sshole #1.

He said, 'Hello.'

I said, 'You're an @sshole!' (But I didn't hang up.)

He asked, 'Are you still there?'

I said, 'Yeah.'

He screamed, 'Stop calling me.'

I said, 'Make me.'

He asked, 'Who are you?'

I said, 'My name is Don Hansen.'

He said, 'Yeah? Where do you live?'

I said, '@sshole, I live at , in I have a black Beamer parked in front.'

He said, 'I'm coming over right now, Don. And you had better start saying your prayers.'

I said, 'Yeah, like I'm
really scared, @sshole, and hung up.

Then I called @sshole #2.

He said, 'Hello?'

I said, 'Hello, @sshole,'

He yelled, 'If I ever find out who you are...'

I said, 'You'll what?'

He exclaimed, 'I'll kick your @ss,'

I answered, 'Well, @sshole, here's your chance. I'm coming over right now.'

Then I hung up and immediately called the police, saying that I
lived at 34 Oak Tree Blvd, in blah, blah,
and that I was on my way over there to kill my gay lover.

Then I called Channel 9 News about the gang war going down on Oaktree Blvd in ...

I quickly got into my car and headed over to Oaktree Blvd .

I got there just in time to watch two @ssholes beating the crap out of each other in front of six cop cars,
an overhead news helicopter and surrounded by
a news crew.

NOW I feel much better. Anger Management really does work.

The Barber and the Kid

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, "This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you."

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, "Which do you want, son?" The boy takes the quarters and leaves.

"What did I tell you?" said the barber. "That kid never learns!"

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. "Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?"

The boy licked his ice cream cone and replied, "Because the day I take the dollar, the game's over!"

Body Found In Salt River

Champaign County Sheriffs Department reports finding a man's body in the Salt Fork river just west of the Kelly's Tavern Historical Site Bridge.

The man's name will not be released until his family has been notified. The victim apparently drowned after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol.

He was wearing black fishnet stockings, a red garter belt with matching bra, and an Obama T-shirt.

The deputy removed the Obama T-shirt to spare his family any unnecessary embarrassment.

THREE THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

1. THE COWS
2. THE CONSTITUTION
3. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

ON COWS:

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that our government can
track a cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where
she sleeps in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their
stalls.

But they are unable to locate 11-20 million illegal aliens wandering
around our country. Maybe we should give them all a cow.

ON THE CONSTITUTION:

They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq, why don't we just
give them ours?
It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it's worked for
over 200 years and we're not using it anymore.

ON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS:

The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a court-house is
....
You cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery",
and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and
politicians -- it creates a hostile work environment.

Subject: country funeral

As a young minister, I was asked by a funeral director to hold a Grave-side service for a homeless man, with no family or friends.

The funeral was to be held at a cemetery way back in the country, and this man would be the first to be laid to rest there.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods area, I became lost; and being a typical man did not stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late.

I saw the backhoe and the crew, who was eating lunch, but the hearse was nowhere in sight. I apologized to the workers for my tardiness, and stepped to the side of the open grave, where I saw the vault lid already in place.

I assured the workers I would not hold them up for long, but this was the proper thing to do. The workers gathered around, still eating their lunch.

I poured out my heart and soul. As I preached the workers began to say "Amen," "Praise the Lord," and "Glory"! I preached, and I preached, like I'd never preached before: from Genesis all the way to Revelations.

I closed the lengthy service with a prayer and walked to my car. As I was opening the door and taking off my coat, I overheard one of the workers saying to another, "I ain't never seen anything like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Making Your Blog Attractive

Today I decided to change up the whole design to this site. I felt the old template I was using was a little bland and didn't stand out in the blogosphere. Thus began my search for a new template that I could use for this site. I browsed a few templates from btemplates.com and downloaded one that I liked. Btemplates.com has hundreds of templates to choose from so you should have no problems finding a template that suits your tastes.

While each template has different layouts, you may need to do some link fixing once you upload your template. This can take some time depending on the template and how well you know HTML. I would suggest testing each template out until you find the one you want to go with.

I downloaded one, called Geek-Village, that I really liked but some of the links came out white which was the same color as the background. I fixed the link from within the HTML but for some reason it bugged out on me and would not save the changes. After that I quickly downloaded a new template, which is the one I'm using now.

Now that I have my new template installed, I can start concentrating on adding new content again.

If you know of any Blogger tips & tricks let us know, I'm always looking for new ways to do things.

Project YouTube

This Project was done on my other blog How To Make Me Rich, and thought I would post it here as well.

___________________________

Here is the deal, how much traffic can I drive to this site using only one YouTube Video.

Don't let my teacher give me an F in marketing.

All I need is the statistical data to finish writing my report. I have one month from the time I post the video. I am using SiteMeter, from SiteMeter.com, to report how many clicks I receive from YouTube verses other online mechanisms. I will post my results once the paper is finished.

Leave a post and let me know what you think the results will be.

Don't forget to subscribe to get an update as soon as I post them.

Less is More

Have you ever asked yourself, "what can I do to become a better blogger." I have asked myself that same question a million times, but have I really thought about what I'm doing wrong. I would have to say, NO.

Being new to blogging in general was a little over whelming at first, and still is in most cases. Familiarizing myself with the layouts, building traffic, adding quality article, and busting balls to get some featured article is a tremendous amount of work. I have a few blog sites that I maintain and have a few other side projects that I'm currently working on.

I have found out that writing articles to each of my blogs, updating several websites, maintaining a YouTube Channel, and other similar project at one time is time consuming to say the least. I wanted to start out slow but I'm thinking I got a little carried away.

Last week was so chaotic that I left myself with no time to improve my overall blogging skill sets.
I believe we all posess a set of skills that need to be refined from time to time. Old skills need to be deleted and new skills need to be added to keep up with the influx of new technologies.

We all have a different set of skills that we start out with and with some hard work and study we can improve on those skills. Only by reducing the amout of time that we devote on new endevors, can we ensure that our new skills are being refined properly.

Last week, I accomplished the task of consolidating some of my projects and put new endeavors on hold. I will concentrate on the sites I currently host and try to improve only on my current sites. I have been looking for new and insightful ways to improve my blog and I hope to add a few new skills during the process.

Remember, sometimes less is more. Make work a little bit easier by fine tuning what you have and not rushing more content at the expense of quality.

The best way for me to know how well I'm blogging is to ask for feedback from those of you that read my articles. The feedback can be positive or negative,
what I'm wanting to know is:

  • Do you like the layout of the site?
  • Do I need to add more content or do you have content you would like to see?
  • Would you like to see featured articles?
  • Do you think the pages too busy?
  • How frequently would you like to see content added?

Comment Linking

Now that I have content on this site I’m ready for the world to find it. There are many ways to increase the about of web traffic coming into your site. While Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not an exact science, we do know that links can build traffic.

Today I thought I would try comment linking. Comment linking is about building links to your website or blog by posting comments in other blogs that are within your niche. I also created a spread sheet to keep track of sites that I have commented on. You could also bookmark each site and keep track of your links that way.

You should only post on sites that are within your niche and never post, "Nice blog" or "Great Post" as it may be considered spam. Try to leave a post that is relevant but leaves the reader wanting to learn more about your site. You don't want Google to crackdown on you for spamming other sites with your links, this could net you a permaban from Ad Sense.

I also installed Site Meter into this blog; SiteMeter will allow me to keep track of the methods being used to generate traffic to my blog. This is a great way to find out where your traffic is coming from. Site Meter is free you can sign up at SiteMeter.com.

I will be posting updates to this article to show if this tactic works well for driving web traffic. I am skeptical to say the least but will give anything a chance.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate Programs can make you money if you market them just right. So that's what I've heard from fellow bloggers. To test this method I setup an account at Clickbank. Clickbank is an Affiliate Program Network that has a plethora of companies begging for you to sign up and sell their products.

Take for example Yaro Starak whose six-figure income from blogging is a riveting rags to riches story. Yaro's Program can be purchased through an affiliate program. Now, for the affiliate program to work, you will have to convince people on your site to purchase the product after clicking on your link. Once a purchase has been confirmed then you will receive a cut of the proceeds.

I'm not sure how to test this, suggestion would be nice.

Below is an excerpt from an Affiliate Program using ClickBank. Use the link below to purchase the program and start making that Six-figure income.

Using YouTube to Drive Traffic To Your Blog

Someone once told me that you can use YouTube to help drive traffic to your blog. If you're like me, you are probably asking yourself how can YouTube help me make money on my blog. Well, YouTube is the leader in online video, and lets be honest you need traffic to make money.

With YouTube Videos being watched by millions everyday, you have the potential of generating a substantial amount of traffic to your web site. The increase in web traffic could lead you to new clients, readers, or revenue streams.

To test this all I will need is:

1. A YouTube Account

2. A Digital Camera

3. And Something Clever to Say

I now have 1 and 2 checked off my list and I'm currently working on number 3. The key for YouTube working for you is all about what you do or say in the video. If the video is decent you should be able to generate enough hits and add traffic to your web site.

If anyone has a good strategy, I would love to hear it. I will try and have a video to test the YouTube method by this weekend.

Here are a few notes from my previous usage on YouTube when uploading Video for other projects. The videos I have uploaded are mostly family videos and have only produced a few thousand hits total.

Once your video is ready to upload to YouTube, remember to add a description and tags. Tags are used by YouTube to help find relevant topics when people are looking for videos. Don't be shy when it comes to the tags more is always better. If for some reason your video doesn't produce many hits, you can change the tags at any time.

Increasing Web Traffic

Most people that blog, do so for different reasons, some do it for money while others use blogging as an outlet to have their opinions and experiences heard. Whatever your motives may be many of us come to a point when we decide to make a few dollars for our time. Although most bloggers will never make enough money to fully compensate them for the time they put in to their work; a few dollars here and there might be enough to compensate for some of their expenses.

If you are using Google's Ad Sense on your site, then you probably already know that you need traffic to generate revenue. If you haven't used Google's Ad Sense program then I would highly suggest you apply for an account. You can apply for an Ad Sense account at Google.com in just a few minutes.

How does Ad Sense work, the theory is rather simple, Google searches your website and looks for keywords to help place better adds on your site via Ad Sense. When ads are populated on your website based upon your keywords, you will have a higher click count, which means more revenue.

Now that I have an account and placing Google ads on my site, how do I get ordinary people to click on them to generate a little coin. Well if I knew how to do that I would already be a millionaire. The first thing I will need to do is boost my web traffic. If you don't have anyone coming to your site, who is going to click on your ads?

Currently there is no exact formula, that I have found, to boost you web traffic overnight unless you are already famous or talented. However, there are techniques that are working for the masses that people use that seem to work well. These Search Engine Optimization techniques or SEO for short, have people scrambling to improve their website to achieve the top spots within search engines.

Many bloggers who blog about getting rich quick say, "to increase the amount of traffic moving to your site, add lots of original content and make sure your content has a niche, something you are passionate about and try not to sway to far from that niche."

If you have any tips to increse web traffic please leave a comment, we would love to here it.

As I add more posts I will update what seems to work and what doesn't. Please leave feedback so I can provide better content in the future.

Google Ad Sense

There is probably thousands of sites out there that tell you how to make money online. I have read article after blog after tweet and they all say the same things.....it's easy to do, just do these 10 things and bang your rich.

All this may sound to good to be true and if you don't have a few good tricks up your sleeves your chances of getting rich are slim. Making money from a blog has never worked for me and I'm betting, because you are here reading this blog, that it's not working for you either.

The first get rich quick theme, that I will be testing, is Google Ad Sense. With Google Ad Sense you can create advertising for your website on a pay-per-click(PPC)basis. Depending on how much traffic your website receives per day, your potential growth can be anywhere from $1 dollar a day to well over $40,000 a month.

As you can see I have already set up an account and Google Ads are now displaying on this blog. It has been a week now and my revenue is just pouring in....well not really I made a whopping .23 cents.

Adding Ad Sense to your blog or website will only work if you have traffic already being driven to your site. If you don't have any traffic to your site then that should be your first priority. There are many ways in which to drive traffic to your site; I will not go into details on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in this article but will briefly highlight what I feel to be the top two.

In the land of SEO, content is king. You need to have content that your follower will want to read about and share with their friends. Engage your reader by asking questions, replying to e-mails promptly, and creating article that are current and relevant to your audience.

Link Building ranks high when trying to increase your Page Rank with Google. Google seems to love links being directed to your site. You should seek out other websites and blogs that are within your niche and have decent page ranking and ask them to create a link to your site. While this may take some convincing for the owners of the site to link to you; It will pay off in the long run.

Don't expect your traffic you increase over night, give it some time and engage your readers and you should see your traffic slowly starting to increase.

Don't forget to add comments or suggest new topics.

Update Your Drivers

When was the last time you updated the drivers on your PC? To tell you the truth It has been awhile since I updated my computer. Dealing with and tracking down drivers for each individual piece of hardware is not what I consider a good time.

However, I found a great website, called DriverAgent.com, that will look at all your hardware on your computer and lets you know which drivers need updated. The whole process only takes a few minuets.

Go to DriverAgent.com and click on the "Scan my PC Now" button to start your scan. You will be asked to download a small executable file, so make sure you anti-virus software doesn't block it.

Below is the report generated for my box. Don't laugh at my 10 out of date drivers until you run the program on your PC. It might now be funny then.

For a small fee, DriverAgent.com will also download and install the drivers you need. If you're like me then print the report then find and download each driver yourself.

Troubleshoot a Remote Control using a Digital Camera

In a world crammed full of electronic devices, the use of remote controls are everywhere. At some point in time your bound to have one fizzle out on you; leaving you no choice but to revert back into manipulating your electronics the old fashioned way. If you’re like me then this is not an option. I would rather sit and watch paint dry than get up and change the channel. Below is a quick troubleshooting guide to get you started in the right direction on finding what is wrong with that remote.

1. Change your batteries to the remote and make sure they are orientated the right way. (Believe it or not, this is in most cases the problem.)

2. Make sure the inferred laser is free from debris on both the remote and the electronic device. (I had this happen to me once when one of my kid got peanut butter all over the remote.)

3. Troubleshoot the remote using your digital camera. All you have to do is turn on your digital camera and face the remote so the inferred laser is pointing directly into the lens. Now, looking through the LCD panel and not the view finder you will see the inferred light if it’s working correctly.

4. Use the manual if you haven’t thrown it away yet. If you have thrown it away, like most of us do these days, you can go to Retrevo.com to find one.
